A Wild Escape into Anderson Valley Wine Country
An extraordinary wine region rooted in nature, community, and the art of cool-climate viticulture.
Anderson Valley wine region is a wild, mist-shrouded sanctuary where majestic redwood forests meet rolling hillside vineyards.
Tucked away in northern California’s rugged Mendocino County, just 110 miles northwest of San Francisco, our uncrowded appellation is a hidden haven for cool-climate viticulture. Established as a non-profit 501(c)6 organization in 2005, the Anderson Valley Winegrowers Association (AVWA) is dedicated to supporting, promoting, and safeguarding this world-class winegrowing community.

Generations
Before wine grapes defined the valley, Anderson Valley was celebrated throughout California for its thriving apple orchards and agricultural abundance. The historic Apple Fair became a lasting symbol of the region’s farming roots.
Driven by a pioneering spirit, Milla Handley entered the emerging world of California winemaking and soon recognized the untapped potential of Anderson Valley’s cool coastal climate.
The recognition of the Anderson Valley AVA marked the beginning of a new era, positioning the region as an exceptional environment for premium wine grapes and artisanal winemaking.
Milla Handley became the first female winemaker in the United States to establish a namesake winery, helping shape the valley’s independent identity while championing early organic farming practices.
Historic producers including Husch Vineyards, Navarro Vineyards, Greenwood Ridge, and Handley Cellars helped establish Anderson Valley as a destination rooted in craftsmanship, sustainability, and authenticity.
Today’s growers and winemakers continue to honor the valley’s agricultural heritage while advancing a shared commitment to sustainable viticulture and world-class wines.

Marginal Climate, Virtuous Wines
Stretching 15 miles along the Navarro River, the valley acts as a natural funnel, pulling cold ocean breezes and thick fog directly from the Pacific Coast. This coastal draft creates extreme diurnal temperature variations of up to 50°F (10°C).
At the northwesternmost tip of the valley lies the legendary “Deep End”. Here, closest to the ocean, consistently cooler days allow grapes to ripen slowly, developing exquisite phenolic complexity and vibrant natural acidity while maintaining lower alcohol levels.
High-altitude fractured schist on our steepest hillsides, forcing roots to dig deep into rock to yield intense minerality, rustic forest floor aromatics, and firm tannins.
Rich loam over sandstone that provides exceptional drainage, resulting in elegant Pinot Noirs with bright red-fruit profiles.
